Why CCC Open Studio?
4. In my craft stash I have a number of mystery items. The mystery isn't about what they are (no identity crises here!), but about what they are for. A lot of times I'll see something and I'll think it's very pretty or very intriguing and I'll add it to my collection. And then it just sits there. I know these things have great potential but I can't figure out how to tap into it. They style or color scheme is too different from my usual, or I just don't have enough imagination to get it right. These items are waiting patiently for you to come along and redeem them. And I'm waiting for you to use what I can't use, and to show me a new and unique way of getting crafty. Please come soon!

Why CCC Open Studio?
3. I need to create. If a week goes by where I haven't made, drawn or written anything, my fingers start to itch and I feel my whole world begin to tilt at a queasy angle. Thank G-d, I have many ways and lots and lots of craft supplies to express myself, hopefully before things start going funny. I know I'm not the only one to have this creative urge, and I wonder how other people live with it. Do you satisfy the urge? With what supplies? Where? How often? Is it enough? For those who don't or can't satisfy the urge, how do you manage? How do you stifle the urge? And how do you remain relatively sane with this quashed but unsatitsfied urge? I'm sure there are other who don't have this creative urge, yet every once in a while they want to have some crafty fun or they need to make something for an occasion, but they're not sure who has supplies they can use and the patience to show them how to use it. I am offering Creative Chabad Crafts Open Studio as a place where older girls and women can get creative. Here you can find the space, supplies and guidance you want to freely and fully express yourself. I look forward to welcoming you to CCC Open Studio!

Why CCC Open Studio?
2. Thank G-d I'm blessed with an incredible mashpia, and among the other ways she's there for me she's figured out (more or less) how to follow my quirky thought process. She still knows, however, that that's a challenging and rare skill for most people to develop! Often, I'll share with her my latest scheme to create and sell a craft idea, and she'll remind me that most people don't understand what I'm talking about. Instead, she'll tell me I need to bring people into my craft space, show them what I have, let them show me what they know and then I can promote my grand ideas. So, once again, I'm trying to carry out my mashpia's instructions, not only because she's my trustworthy mashpia but also because I, too, think this is a good idea! Come on over so we can  share our crafty wisdom with each other!

Why CCC Open Studio? 1

1. The Rebbe very much wants me to work in chinuch (education). I am not a teacher! Been there, done that, not again! For now I have an AA and a BA in psychology, and iy"H when I'm ready I will go back to school to get my MA so I can become a qualified art therapist. (Note: a chosid does not belong in college! I say this despite, and in a way especially because of, the fact that I've been to college myself. Please message me if you would like to know more about why and how I chose to go to college.) In the meantime, I've set up CCC Open Studio to share my love of crafts with others. I'm not sure how chinuch will play a role, especially as I strongly want Open Studio to be agenda-free, but I figure that when a few Jews get together there's bound to be something inspirational going on! As they say, two Jews, three opinions, one heart!

CCC Open Studio - Just the facts please!

What: Scrapbooking papers, stamps, stickers, heat embossing powders, ribbons, twine and threads, bling, die-cutting and embossing machine, Chabad-friendly Jewish and Hebrew supplies, envelope punch board, mosaics, paints, gift packaging, hair accessories, paper marbling and more!

Creative Chabad Crafts Open Studio!

Libby: I tried getting crafty last night. I cleared a corner of the dining room table, I found a piece of construction paper that was mostly unscribbled and a few abc* crayons. Sadly, Sara’le wouldn’t share the smelly sticker she got at the doctor’s office today

Brocha: You should check out Creative Chabad Crafts Open Studio! I bet you’ll love it!

Libby: Creative Chab- what?

Brocha: CCC OS, right here in Crown Heights! You pay $20 and you get an hour to play with all the craft supplies you want to create whatever you want. And the first time you go you get an extra 15 minutes, just to check out the stash!

Libby: You mean I won’t have to unbury my table? And I can have a fresh sheet of construction paper all for myself?

Brocha: Yup and yup! The craft area is well-stocked, organized and roomy. And Miriam has more than just construction paper and more than just paper. She has adult-style, quality supplies- only a handful of pompoms and no pipe cleaners! She has papers in a ton of colors and styles and patterns, and quite a few are special papers, like metallic, vellum and shimmery vellum. She has lots of paper-crafting supplies, like stamps and stickers and heat embossing powders for a touchable, glossy effect (5) and ribbons, twine and threads (5), and bling. And she has a die-cutting machine!

Libby: A what machine?

Brocha: Die-cutting. It cuts out perfect shapes of paper and other materials, like your basic hearts and stars and circles, or more interesting shapes, like borders or frames or flowers. She has a neat flower die set (1) that once you put it through the machine you can use both the innies and the outies! And the machine also embosses (1) different designs, so they kind of pop on top of the paper & look & feel 3-d

Libby: Maybe I can finally finish some of the kids’ baby books! And it would be nice to create a stash of greeting cards, like happy birthday cards, thank you, just because…

Brocha: And even Shana Tova or mazel tov cards! Miriam has a nice collection of Chabad-friendly Jewish and Hebrew supplies (5)! And you can make your own envelopes (1), with the envelope punch board

Libby: So maybe I can make some posters for my classroom

Brocha: And by the way, CCC OS has supplies for lots of different crafts (5), not just paper crafts! Mosaics, paints, gift packaging, hair accessories, paper marbling and more

Libby: Oh, gosh! This is starting to sound really complicated

Brocha: Don’t worry, Miriam will give you as much guidance as you want or she can keep quiet. Just let her know what you want

Libby: This is sounding really nice! I can think of a few projects I’d like to make (2+)! I'm just wondering, would you know if I can bring any of the kids along? It might be a nice way to spend some quality time with them

Brocha: Up to 3 people at a time can go, but you can only bring Zeldie for now. You gotta wait until Shira has her bas mitzva before she can go. Oh, and don’t bring Levi! The studio isn’t really a baby-friendly place and if he’s awake for more than 10 minutes Miriam will automatically charge an extra $10 baby-sitting fee
Libby: That’s good to know about the girls, although it’s just too bad about the baby. I guess I’ll just really have to enjoy myself! But when can I go, with all my free time?
Brocha: Miriam has hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Just reserve by noon of the day before at the latest and she’ll probably be happy to have you
Libby: And her husband and kids don’t mind?
Brocha: She’s not married and she has her own apartment, no roommates
Libby: Hmmm, maybe we should try to find her a shiduch
Brocha: Nah, let’s keep out of her private business, at least for now. ‘Sides, if she gets married she might not be able to continue offering Open Studio
Libby: Ok, fine. I’ll keep quiet for now. Now, how do I get in touch with her?

Purim Nosh Tags

 

This probably doesn't look very feminine but the colors, the flower buttons & the soft look are definitely girlier than my usual!  Usually I make projects for the fun of it & try to keep them as neutral as possible because I have no idea what (if anything) they'll be used for. This time I knew I was creating tags for women so I knew girly would be ok!

Michal, the second layer of paper is mulberry paper (although I'm not sure if it's from the pack you gave me, as I combined all my mp). It was just what I wanted to add a soft touch of interest and texture to the tags! Thanks again!

Happy Birthday and

Happy accomplishment to me, that I finally got this done! I have a lot going on now thank G-d (passover, school, among other fun stuff) & i've been creating, contemplating & finally completing this card in lots of fits & starts over the past few weeks. I feel relieved to have it finished & it came out looking quite interesting, mostly in a good way :)!

Some Angst and Some Scraps

 

 

I had a very hard day last week and i knew I wanted to do something creative to get out some of the negative energy but I didnt want to plan and measure and ink up and get messy. This was the simpler option, where I chose my scraps- and about halfway through I realized most of them were either neutrals or had some pink in them!- cut them up, gluesticked them & pasted in place. Of course it ended up being a bit technical and I had to strategize a few times & i had some messy cuttings afterwards but it was probably still a simpler project compared to my usual!

Liba's Card and Pin

My nieces get to celebrate at their aunt's wedding tomorrow night G-d willing and I've been given the (paid :)) honor of making their hairclips. In my (overly) loving aunt-hood, & also because I love these challenges, I made cards to clip the pins onto. This is the card for my almost-3-year-old niece, Liba (her name is stamped in Hebrew under the rest of the stamps):

 

Fun fact: Liba had her first haircut for her pretty baby curls just 3 weeks ago! Her talented older (by a bit more than a year) brother gives surprisingly half-decent haircuts! He voluntarily cut his sister's hair & left only one small bald spot. He also very kindly only cut the hair on the right side of her head. Lucky for him his parents were amused & now his little sis is the first (& prob only one) to sport this ultra-modern hairstyle!

Birthday Cake II, Not as Speedy

So this is what my first cake card looked like, once it dried:

 

I like the beads but its about 25x stronger than the rest of the image, esp with the yellow layer on top (that's one end of my multi-color inkpad).
But, now that I already opened my birthday cake set, I wanted to play with it successfully & eventually I came up with this tag:
