Train for YM
My friend's son just turned 6 and he asked me for a gift. I didnt want to get him the remote control car he asked for but i offered to make him a card and he was very excited by the idea. the hebrew words are his three names, in Hebrew.

Good Morning! (SDC80)
A little hands-on (literally!) lesson in Jewish practice:
Before we go to bed at night, we fill a cup with water, place it in a bowl, and set it near our beds, so it will be availble for use first thing in the morning. At night, our sages tell us, our souls return to G-d, where they are "refreshed" and graciously returned to us the next morning, to start our day and continue living the best life possible. The first words we say upon waking are the words of this little prayer:
מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם, שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה. רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ
Modeh anee lefanecha melech chai vekayam, she-he-chezarta bee nishmatee b’chemla, raba emunatecha.
I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is greathttp://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/623937/jewish/Modeh-Ani.htmThen we take the cup in our right hand, pass it to the left hand, wash our right hand until the wrist and then the left hand; repeat, and then repeat again.
Once this is done, we're ready to get out of bed and begin a new, inspiring day!
In my community, we place great emphasis on training our children and inspiring them from when they are very young. Many people will say the prayers "with" their newborns and wash their hands for them. By the time a child is 2-3 they are usually very familiar with the process and eager to do it on their own (or at least learn about the properties of water through first-hand experience :)).
I walked into a store recently and saw my friend there, with a few of her young children. They were looking to spend their "chanukah gelt (money)", on something jewish oriented as per the custom, and the three year old was going to buy a generic, and imnsho ugly & overpriced, wash cup and bowl. I "hired myself out" to custom-design a set for the little girl. Aside for the flowers, the big three-letter word & the word on the cup is חנה, or Chanah, her Hebrew name, and the little words are the opening words of the morning prayer, Modeh anee lefanecha- "Thankful am I to You..."
(Bonus Inspiriation, also from chabad.org:
I have always loved how the first thing a Jew says in the morning is Modeh Ani. While still in bed, eyes closed and barely conscious, Modeh Ani is what we say. The Modeh Ani prayer is where we thank our Creator for giving us back life and restoring our soul. Jewish philosophy teaches that sleep is one-sixtieth of death, so we are grateful to have woken up in the morning.
But we don’t say the phrase in the usual order, which would mean, "I thank You," but rather, "Thank You I." It doesn’t seem to make sense grammatically—but it makes perfect sense. When we wake up, before we are to think about ourselves, and certainly before we talk about ourselves (I had the weirdest dream, I had the worst sleep, I am exhausted . . .) we first say "Thank You." Thank You that I am breathing. Thank You that I am alive. Once we express our gratitude, then we mention ourselves.)
Good night and good morning y'all!

http://stampotiquedesignerschallenge.blogspot.com/2012/12/sdc80-out-with-old-in-with-new.html i had some paint markers that would work nicely and/or make huge puddles, at about a 50-50% rate. Thank G-d I just got some new paint markers! They still puddle up occasionally, but not as often, it's usually my fault, and its fairly controllable. The paint marker eraser pen by marvywas not new but i hardly every used it before this project and this time i was able to fully try it out and enjoy it. It also worked well for the permanent markers on this surface!

Golden Grid
So I tried, again, to do ghost masking, and i failed, again, to get it right, as you can see (or rather barely notice the effect) in the first picture. I think it might work better with a more solid stamp or two. On that note, I think I might have an easier time at this challenge with another PTI stamp set or two (or three or four...)
I lent out my paper trimmer and I cant find my bone folder so we'll have to pretend this is a card for now. In the meantime im not so sure how I will embellish it bec. i cant really see what it looks like, as a card. also, it looks a bit plain but the elements are busy. im looking forward to playing around with it! Also, i dont know what occasion i might end up using (or even selling!) this for, but i plan on writing the sentiment in gold, somewhere on the center panel, around the dark blue design image.

Taking a Fun Break!
I've been trying to work out the logistics of a mosaics project and it feels like its taking forever, going in circles, and costing endless amounts of money. This card was a welcome chance to have fun, from start to finish in one go. Yay! Now back to the mosaics...

Happy B-day C, #2
Btw, I figured out who gets which card: the first happy bday c card is going to my sister, chaya. its brown and long and will nicely fit the bar of chocolate i want to tuck inside it. (if you remember, a few weeks ago i made a card for my sister, Brocha, and sent some chocolate with it. my family practically lives on chocolate and books, but these two sisters happen to be in places where good kosher chocolate isnt readily available.) the blue and purple flowery one will go to my favorite oldest sister-in-law (can you tell why is flattered by that? ;)), Chanie, who's birthday is next month, as the colors and girly prettiness match her personality. Today's card will go to my friend, Chanie (all three have names that are popular in the community, and the ch is pronounced like loch), and I can imagine her choosing itmes in these colors if she were shopping. Let's hope my predictions are correct!

Birthday Card- Even Better!
A few weeks ago I made a card for my sister Brocha and I was pleasantly surprised when it came out exactly as I wanted it to. This one was an even bigger surprise as it's even prettier than I thought it would be! Woohoo!
It's interesting how I planned on using certain items and techniques and as I was working on the card other ideas came to me or just made sense and really enhanced the card. Also, although you cant really tell from the picture, i diluted a tiny bit of shimmerz with water and then sprayed it on the central flower for a subtle sparkly effect.

Merry Chanukah WCMd
You can't really tell in the picture but my wink of stella marker (prob one of my favorite craft supplies!) made the word merry really twinkly. i meant to add more light gray to the bottom half of the candles with a marker but i forgot- hopefully someone at papercrafts will do it for me. rather than trying to fit the panel on a folded paper i tied to a backing paper, so there's room to write a personal message but its not a huge, awkward size. happy holidays to all!

I Love You WCMday
You know those cards that are fairly straight forward in your mind but just arent working out on paper? And you keep adding more and more and more stuff just to try to get it to look decent? This is one of those. At least I brought it to the point where I dont feel bad for the person who chooses to use this card! And it was a good learning experience and I got to play with a lot of my supplies :)

Yisroel Chaim, Completed
So here's the completed gift for my friends and their son:
He's holding on to his kippa (skullcap) and tzitzit, which he began formally wearing every day on his third birthday. (Links with more info are available in the original post.) He has since had his haircut and he looks adorable- a little boy with a pudgy baby face :). Mazel tov!

Have a Good, Sweet New Year!
Tonight, Sunday September 16 2012, is the onset of Rosh
Hashana, the Jewish New Year.
Traditionally, we wish each other a good, sweet new year. Why isn’t good good enough?
Everything in this world is from G-d and G-d only does and gives good. We pray that it be sweet, too, that we “taste” the sweet goodness. Here's to a good, sweet for all of us, including the ultimate sweetness, with the revelation of Moshiach (the Jewish Messiah) now!
